Review - Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles

At Fairfield High, everyone knows that south siders and north siders aren’t exactly compatible elements. So when cheerleader Brittany Ellis and gang member Alex Fuentes are forced to be lab partners, the results are bound to be explosive.

Neither teen is prepared for the most surprising chemical reaction of all – love. Can they break through the stereotypes and misconceptions that threaten to keep them apart?

First off, I absolutely love the cover for this book. It immediately drew my attention, yep, I do admit the hot Spanish model on the front caught my eye the most, but isn’t that what it’s supposed to do. I was recommended this book by Liz and Jenny, both of whom are awesome UK bloggers, and everything they told me was the truth. I loved this book, it’ the classic love story, which left me breathless and begging for more.

Brittany Ellis is the stereotypical popular girl; she’s blond, has a great rack and is captain of the pom squad, along with the obligatory basketball star boyfriend. But Brittany isn’t like what you would expect of a girl with her status. She’s caring and passionate and puts on the perfect façade, so no one questions her about her rocky and unstable home life.

Alejandro or Alex, which he prefers, is your typical bad boy with a twist. He’s Mexican, which comes with the gorgeous dark eyes and sultry dusky skin. Man, is he hot. I felt like I needed a cold shower after reading some of the scenes in this book. Yes, believe me, they are that hot. He’s from the poor side of ton and is involved with all the wrong people. Living a life he doesn’t want to save his younger brothers from the same fate.

But they don’t realise how similar they are, even if they do live on opposite sides of town, as they both are living lives they don’t want, conforming to the stereotypes they believe they should be. Fate intervenes, and during chemistry class, their teacher puts them in alphabetical order, which means Alex and Brittany are lab partners for the duration of their senior year.

They both see something in each other they never expected; attraction and love. Will they be able to overcome the stereotypes they have been given and mould themselves into the people they want to be. The odds are against them, but can they prove their love for each other and break down the walls which separate them , for a chance of true happiness.

Wow, the chemistry in this book between Alex and Brittany had me on the edge of my seat, hoping and praying for more. Their attraction to one another and their relation ship shone like the brightest star and I was rooting for them from the first page. I immersed myself into their world and really cared how the book ended and what happened to them. I connected to them they way I have connected to only a few characters before.

I loved the fact that the narrative flipped from Brittany to Alex, giving me a glimpse into their psyche. I love books where there is dual narrative, because you get the best of both worlds. Instead of wondering what the other character is feeling or thinking, you are actually shown. For me, it’s like going to see an amazing concert, and then being given a backstage pass. Very exciting.

The back story of the novel was one that has been going on for as long as I can remember. Race and the social structure were the backbones of the story, both of which was handled exceptionally well. People fighting to break down the social structure they are a part of, is very thought provoking and to think this stuff is still happening all over the world is pretty sad. And it will continue, but hopefully one day, all barriers will be destroyed, because like many great people say, there is only one race; the human race.

The pace of the novel was perfect and once I was immersed in the book, I didn’t want to put it down. The writing style was engrossing, keeping me engaged all the way through. Simone is an exceptional writer. Her style is very addictive and so was the story she told. I also found the book like an emotional whirlwind, it sucked me in and spat me out at the end, but boy was it an exhilarating ride. I loved this book and am so pleased their will be a sequel, Rules of Attraction in May 2010, I can hardly wait.
